State Governments take bold steps, bidding farewell to electricity subsidies

In Nigeria, state governments are planning to remove electricity subsidies and introduce new tariffs. This decision is based on the Electricity Act 2023, which sets up a multi-tier electricity market framework. It includes a wholesale federal market and retail sub-national markets. The aim is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the power industry. The transition of regulatory powers from the Federal Government to State Electricity Regulatory Commission is also part of this plan.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum has called on the Federal Government to address the legacy debts in the power sector. This is an important step towards resolving financial challenges and ensuring the sustainability of the industry. By settling these debts, it will be possible to create a more stable and reliable electricity supply for Nigerian citizens.

The implementation of different tariffs will help to align the cost of electricity with its actual production and distribution. It will also encourage investment in the power sector and promote fair competition among electricity providers. However, it is important to ensure that these changes do not burden the consumers, especially those in lower-income brackets. The government will need to carefully consider the impact on affordability and implement measures to protect vulnerable groups.

The move towards state-level regulation of electricity markets signifies a shift towards decentralisation and localised decision-making. This can lead to more tailored solutions and better responsiveness to the unique needs of each state. It also provides an opportunity for increased collaboration between the federal and state governments in addressing the challenges and opportunities in the power sector.

Overall, these changes in Nigeria’s electricity sector are aimed at improving the efficiency, financial sustainability, and reliability of the power industry. By removing subsidies and implementing different tariffs, the government hopes to create a more competitive and sustainable electricity market that benefits both providers and consumers.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State previously stated that Nigeria is not ready for state police, expressing concerns about potential misuse and exacerbation of security challenges.

President Bola Tinubu has agreed to the establishment of state police, and discussions are ongoing to finalise the modalities for its implementation.
