US Approves Bumper Aid worth Billions to Proxies
Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan are set to receive support worth billions of dollars from the United States. US President, Biden had been pushing the Congress since 2023 to approve the needed aid to Ukraine but was left to wait on the protocols of the House of Representatives to pass the bill. Significantly, the majority in the House of Representative voted in favour of Ukraine and Israel funding which was 311-112 and 366-58 respectively.

The number of Republicans that voted NO was high in the case of Ukraine citing the European Union should do more to help them. Some raised concern of no accountability on how Ukraine spends the funds. Regardless, the bill was passed. There was little contention in support of Israel aid and the passing of the bill was closely monitored by US defence contractors who could be the same to supply weapons for Ukraine and other partners.

Meanwhile, House Speaker, Mike Johnson who has been largely criticized for rejecting the call to pass the legislative bill of $95 billion aid faced threat to be removed. He became speaker in October after succeeding Kevin McCarthy. He chooses to ignore the removal of threats by the hardliners.
The high number of members of the House of Representatives opposing aid for Ukraine calls for worry most especially with Ukraine at dear need of support. This exposes Ukraine is running out of finance and weapons with Russia’s bombardment looking far from an end. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the situation as a case of “tail wagging the dog”.
