Reps proposes six year single term bill

The Nigerian Senate is considering a bill that proposes a single term of six years for the president and state governors, as was proposed by 35 members of the House of Representatives. This means that instead of the current system, where they can serve two terms of four years each, they would only have one term. The aim is to bring about more stability and focus on delivering results during their time in office.

The bill also aims to address the issue of equal representation. It suggests that each state should have at least one minister in the federal cabinet, regardless of its size or population. This would ensure that all states have a voice in the decision-making process at the national level.

Another important aspect of the bill is the focus on reducing the cost of governance. It suggests the reduction of the number of political appointees and the merging of some government agencies to eliminate duplication of roles and save resources. This could help streamline the government and make it more efficient.

The proposed bill also seeks to tackle the issue of corruption and unethical practices. It calls for stricter penalties for electoral offenses and proposes the establishment of a special court to handle cases related to electoral matters. This could help ensure fair and transparent elections and hold accountable those who engage in corrupt practices.

The bill is currently being discussed in the Senate, and it remains to be seen how the discussions will unfold. If passed into law, it could bring significant changes to the political landscape in Nigeria, with a focus on stability, equal representation, cost reduction, and fighting corruption.

Labour stands firm on N250,000 minimum wage, awaits President Tinubu’s decision

Organised Labour in Nigeria is standing firm on its demand for a new minimum wage of N250,000, stating that they will not negotiate what they consider a “starvation wage.” The Nigeria Labour Congress rejects the latest offers of ₦62,000 and ₦100,000, and they are waiting for President Bola Tinubu to consider their proposal.

During an interview at the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed that they are eagerly awaiting President Tinubu’s response. On Monday, the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage submitted its report to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

While the government and the Organised Private Sector agreed on a minimum wage of N62,000, the labour union demanded N250,000. However, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum released a statement, expressing that any minimum wage higher than N60,000 is not sustainable.

The report of the Tripartite Committee will be presented to President Tinubu when the organised labour leaders return from Switzerland. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation expressed gratitude to the committee members for their commitment and sacrifices.

The negotiations between Organised Labour, the government, and the private sector will play a crucial role in determining the future of the minimum wage in Nigeria.

Police save American citizen from jumping into Lagos Lagoon

According to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command, they received a report about an American citizen in his early 30’s who was brought to the Third Mainland Bridge by his baby mama and daughter. The man had intentions of jumping into the Lagoon. However, a passer-by noticed his movements and alerted the RRS operatives on patrol.

The RRS quickly intervened and persuaded the man from taking the leap. They also reunited him with his wife and took them all to the RRS Headquarters in Alausa. The RRS Commander, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, provided the man and his family with advice and directed that the case be transferred to the Gender Department of the Lagos Police Command for further counselling and necessary actions.

The details regarding the man’s identity have been withheld. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and the willingness of people to look out for one another. The prompt action by the RRS and the passer-by helped prevent a tragic outcome.

It’s crucial to raise awareness about mental health and provide support to those in need. The Gender Department of the Lagos Police Command will play a significant role in offering counselling and assistance to the man and his family during this difficult time.

Let’s hope that this incident serves as a reminder for everyone to be more attentive to the well-being of those around us and to reach out for help or support when needed.
