All the candidates are Islamic hardliners who share the idea of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni. About 80 registered intending candidates were vetted by the constitutional body but only six were appointed according to their revolutionary credentials.

The six candidates are; Saheed Jalili, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Masoud Pezeshikian, Mostafa Pourmohammadi, Amir-Hossein Ghasizadeh Hashemi and Alireza Zakani. On the contrary, two notable names were barred from running; former president, Mahmud Ahmadinejad and Ali Larijani.
