It is one of the most productive youth led organizations based in Lunzu, Blantyre Rural carries out its activities within the southern districts of Malawi. Mzati started on the 26th of June 2016 and it runs eight programs mostly focusing on the youth and women empowerment but also promoting the girl child.

As most of the organizations in Malawi do, Mzati has programs in the areas of Women Empowerment; Youth in Sexual Reproductive Health; Keep A Girl Child at School Project; the Youth Action in Climate Change and also COVID– 19 Awareness Campaigns where it encourages the youth to get vaccinated.

On the issue of the deadly coronavirus, the organisation has a program which is aimed at encouraging the youth from the communities where it mostly carries out its activities to get vaccinated but also that they should keep on following all precautionary measures.

Mzati also interacts with the youth by giving them a platform to raise issues affecting their daily lives in a program called Youth in Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights.

In the Area of Traditional Authority Kapeni and Machinjiri, the organisation runs a very powerful program called ‘Keep a Girl Child at School’ and they do support the young girls by running a small-scale business of selling sausages.

Recently the youth led organisation joined hands with other organisations in Malawi to take part in Gender Based Violence (GBV) by launching the 16 days of Activisms. The launch took place in Chiradzulu district.

The organisation is only fully affiliated by the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) which is the only mother body of all youth led organisations in Malawi and it is yet to get certificates from the registrar general but also due to lack of funds the organisation is failing to get a membership certificate from the Council of Non-governmental Organisations of Malawi (CONGOMA) and for this being the case, the organisation fails to get recognition from other International Youth Organisations and well – wishers to support or partner with them in various ways.

On his part, Lawrence Kumpama who is the Executive Director of the Organisation said that they do have a lot of plans specially to support young girls to attain quality education but also for improving the lives of the ordinary youth but the major setback is funding. He also continued by saying that the organisation has a seven-member staff which in most cases he is unable to pay salaries and he is looking forward to partner with any international organisations to work together as partners so that they can be helped with funds to keep it running smoothly.

And according to Lawrence, it is unfortunate that organisations such as Mzati are doing all they can in order to improve others people’s lives but they lack funds to fulfil their intended objectives.

The organisation has a total of 8 programs of which they do rely on sausage business selling to support the young girls in school, pay office rents and also for administrative support and if they can be supported accordingly they can do great things beyond their targeted areas.

End.
