India Election 2024: Narandra holds his ground
The first Indian election was held on the 25th October, 1951 until 21st February, 1952. Since then, several elections have been successfully held to sustain their democracy. On Friday, 19th April, 2024, the world will switch attention to India, the most populous nation to kick start the world’s largest democratic exercise with 969 million registered voters to elect 543 members of the Lok Sabha, India lower houses.
India had more than 2500 political parties but very few parties hold 86% of the seat in Lok Sabha. Lok Sabha is regarded as the house of the people being the lower house of India’s bicameral parliament, while the upper house is Rajya Sabha.
It’s important to a brief check at the main parties contesting for Lok Sabha this year;
BHARATIYA JANATA PARTY (BJP)
BJP claims to be the world largest political organization with almost 180 million members. It was born in 1980. Incumbent PM Narendra Modi is the flag bearer of the party.
INDIA NATIONAL CONGRESS
This is the oldest party dating back to 1885 when British ruled over the India subcontinent. Gandhi remain top aspirant for the party.
AAM AADHI PARTY (AAP)
It is regarded as common person’s party, rose from anti-corruption movement in 2011 during protest. Its prospects is uncertain with pre-election arrests by several high profile leaders in corruption case.
DRAVIDA MUNNTRA KAZHAGAM (DNK)
DMK is India’s third largest party in terms of the number of seats at holds in the lower house parliament.
ALL INDIA TRINAMOOL CONGRESS (TMC)
TMC is the India’s fourth largest party by seats in parliament. One of the TMC candidates is Mahuwa Moitra.
You’ll recall the last election of India that brought PM Narendra Modi, were successfully conducted on the 11th of April to the 19th May 2019. Rajnath Singh occupies Deputy Leader of the houses position since then. They both emerged from BJP International.
Election Observers watches carefully to see how events unfold and will keep studying interesting scenes during election activities to re-elect the incumbent PM or a new leader. The world hopes India conducts a free and fair election.
