The Inspector-General of The Nigeria Police Force, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, recently led a ceremony to decorate several newly promoted officers, including Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Yahaya Sahabo Abubakar, nine Assistant Inspectors General of Police, and fifteen Commissioners of Police at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja. Among the Assistant Inspectors General of Police promoted were AIGs Ahmed Ammani, Dankwara Adamu Mohammed, and others. The Commissioners of Police who received their new ranks include CPs Bassey Samuel Ewah, Osagie John Agans-Irabor, and many more.

Reps to enlarge access to eye care services in Nigeria

The Deputy Speaker of the Nigeria House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, recently shared that the National Eye Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, which has passed its first reading in parliament, is designed to improve access to eye-care services in Nigeria. Kalu made this known during the Charity Champions Gala Night in Abuja, organised by Yahaya Attom of Attom Foundation. The event, attended by current and former Super Eagles players and other celebrities, aims to raise awareness and support for essential eye care services for under-served communities.

Representing Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State, Kalu highlighted his efforts through the Benjamin Kalu Foundation, where he assisted over 4,000 constituents with various eye problems last year, showcasing his dedication to helping underserved communities.

Kalu emphasised the importance of supporting eye care services for underserved communities in Nigeria, noting the significant number of Nigerians experiencing sight loss.

He highlighted the findings of the National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey, which revealed that 4.2% of Nigerians over 40 are classified as blind. Recognising these challenges, Kalu spearheaded the National Eye Centre Act (Amendment) Bill to enhance specialised eye care by establishing more centres nationwide. He stressed that legislative efforts, while crucial, require collective action beyond just laws to address the issue effectively.

Reps debunks rumour of returning to regional government in Nigeria

The Nigeria House of Representatives clarified that they haven’t received any bill about returning to regional governments. They mentioned that the proposal circulating on social media isn’t officially before them. The House explained that there are three ways to propose constitutional amendments: a member proposing a bill, citizens/groups submitting memoranda, or an executive bill. They emphasised that they haven’t rejected or disowned the proposal since it wasn’t presented to them.

The House specified that a memo by Citizen Dr. Akin Fapohunda hasn’t been considered as a bill or submitted for review. They highlighted that the House neither disowned nor accepted the proposal as it’s not currently up for discussion. They encouraged healthy debates and engagement while ensuring all voices are heard in the constitution review.

Nigeria President appoints new Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises

The Nigeria President, Bola Tinubu has chosen Mr. Ayodeji Ariyo Gbeleyi to lead the Bureau of Public Enterprises in Nigeria (BPE) after asking Mr. Mamman Ahmadu to step down as the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

Mr. Gbeleyi, a well-respected financial expert and award-winning chartered accountant, has been appointed to this key role. He is affiliated with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN). He has also completed executive programs at prestigious institutions like the London Business School, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and Lagos Business School.

With a career spanning over 30 years, Mr. Gbeleyi has gained experience in various sectors including manufacturing, FMCG, banking, telecommunications, and public administration. His previous roles as the board Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and Commissioner of Finance in Lagos State have showcased his expertise and leadership in financial matters.

President Tinubu expects Mr. Gbeleyi to utilise his extensive background to strengthen the BPE as a national resource centre for capacity building and reform sustainability. The President aims to foster a competitive private sector-driven economy, enhance social accountability, ensure effective use of public resources, and promote corporate governance in both public and private sectors.
