Russia crackdown on its own physicists considered “overzealous”

A number of Russian physicists who worked with hypersonic weapons production companies have been arrested and accused of treason by the Russian Government.

Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin boasted that his country is the leading hypersonic weapon producer in the world. The weapons travel at more than five-times the speed of sound.

But, most of the physicists working on the science of hypersonic production have been charged with treason and imprisoned. Right groups call it over an “overzealous crackdown”.

Four of the physicists arrested are dead. Most of them were trailed, had their homes raided, were arrested and put in confinement. At least 12 physicists who are all associated with institutions that work on hypersonic technology have been arrested since 2015.

The Russian Government accused them of passing state secrets to foreign countries and thereby charged for treasonable offences.
