As one of its core objectives of supporting the girl child, The Change for Girls and Women (GCW) on 7th January 2022 donated various school materials to young girls at Makumba Primary School in Zomba district.
The donations came in good time as the schools have just opened for the first academic term since returning from the Christmas holidays. According to the Communications Officer for the project McDonald Malinje, they felt it wise to support the young girls with their studies and to encourage them to be hard working so as to become the leaders of tomorrow and to empower other young girls at the school in future.
The donations came under the theme ‘I Am a Girl Child, I Can’ which also provides career guidance, activities and answered questions the girls might have. The group also managed to donate sanitary pads, note books, ballpoint pens, pencils, washing soap and face masks to a total of about 117 girls at the school.
As the Change for Girls and Women Project has no other financial sponsors Mr Malinje continued by saying that they wished they could have helped a lot more girls. As their activities are self-sponsored by its founding members and due to limited resources they could only manage to donate to girls from 4 classes.
He further added that during the donations a lot of the students had high expectations that they would receive the school materials but this could not be managed to help them all at once. Mr Malinje is therefore appealing to all well-wishers from the international organisations and individuals who might be interested to further encourage the good work supporting the girl child so they can reach out to many more needy girls in their future planned events in order to make a better world for girl child.
Mr. Malinje concluded by saying that they were too happy that at least they managed to put a smile on these young girl’s faces and they will not stop to help them in any way they can.
