FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP DECLARES VICTORY IN US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Donald Trump has declared victory in the US presidential election following a strong performance that allowed him to secure several swing states and the popular vote. While the counting of votes continued in various contests, Trump spoke to supporters in Florida around 2:30 am on Wednesday, noting that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris had no viable path to victory.
At his election night gathering in West Palm Beach, Trump proclaimed, “This is the greatest political movement of all time,” emphasising the significance of their mission to help the country heal. If confirmed, he would become only the second US president to serve non-consecutive terms, joining Grover Cleveland.
The 78-year-old, who faced two assassination attempts this year, expressed a desire to unite Americans, stating, “It’s time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us.” Meanwhile, Harris did not appear at her event at Howard University in Washington DC, with her campaign chair indicating she would address supporters the following day.
Trump’s performance exceeded expectations among key voter demographics, particularly Hispanics, a group that has traditionally supported Democrats. If his victory is validated, he will return to the White House in January, coinciding with the inauguration of US presidents, while Republicans are also poised to maintain control of both congressional chambers.
CHINA HOSTS MYANMAR’S EMBATTLED LEADER FOR HIS FIRST VISIT AFTER THE COUP
Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s military leader, is visiting China for the first time since he overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021. His regime has faced significant setbacks in the civil war against insurgents, raising doubts about his leadership’s longevity. The trip, though not a state visit, is notable as China is Myanmar’s largest trading partner and key ally.
Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Kunming, Yunnan province, leading a delegation of officials and business representatives to attend a minor summit of the Greater Mekong Sub-region. Since the coup, he has been largely isolated, missing out on regional meetings typically attended by Myanmar’s leaders and primarily visiting Russia, a close ally.
During his stay, he is anticipated to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who is overseeing the summit. The event is low-profile, featuring leaders from other authoritarian nations like Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. China’s careful attention to diplomatic protocol emphasises the significance of Min Aung Hlaing’s attendance at this gathering.
This visit comes amid speculation that China may be distancing itself from Min Aung Hlaing following a year of turmoil in Myanmar. However, his presence at a Chinese-hosted meeting suggests that Beijing still regards him as a crucial player in addressing the ongoing conflict in Myanmar.

SOUTH AFRICA CLOSES BORDER CROSSING WITH MOZAMBIQUE DUE TO ELECTION VIOLENCE
South Africa has shut down one of its busiest border points with Mozambique due to violent protests following the recent presidential election in Mozambique. These demonstrations have resulted in deadly confrontations across various cities after the ruling Frelimo party’s disputed victory last month.
Reports indicate that vehicles have been set ablaze on the Mozambican side of the Lebombo border crossing. In light of these security threats and for public safety, the South African border agency announced that the port will remain closed until further notice.
Lebombo, a major land border in southern Africa, is located approximately 110 km from Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, and around 440 km from Pretoria, South Africa’s capital. Travellers are advised to seek alternative routes between the two nations.
Although the South African side has not been directly impacted, safety measures are being implemented. Some structures have been damaged, and authorities are working to secure the Lebombo border and ensure the safety of all travellers. Reports also mention that some officials from Mozambique have sought refuge in South Africa amid the unrest.

SURGEON CONDUCTS TRANSFORMATIVE OPERATION ON A BOAT
An Oxford surgeon highlights the significant demand for transformative surgeries on the largest floating hospital in the world. Rachel Buckingham, a consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeon, dedicates part of her time to volunteering with Mercy Ships, offering free surgeries to children who lack access to necessary medical care.
One such child is Fudia, a 10-year-old girl from Sierra Leone, who experienced a remarkable change after Dr. Buckingham corrected her severely bowed legs, resulting in a height increase of 14cm (5.5in). The three-hour surgery was organised by the international charity, Mercy Ships.
Dr. Buckingham recalls her first encounter with Fudia, describing how each step was incredibly painful for her due to her twisted legs, making walking a daily struggle.
She notes that although many children require urgent surgical intervention, Fudia’s quiet bravery particularly resonated with her. Despite her hardships, including the loss of her parents at a young age and being denied help from hospitals, Fudia maintained her hope.
