The Nigeria House of Representatives suggests adding a new state to Nigeria

The Nigeria House of Representatives recently passed a bill proposing the creation of a fresh state called Orlu State in the southeastern part of Nigeria. The bill, sponsored by Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere and other lawmakers, seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution and increase the number of states in Nigeria from 36 to 37.

As stated in the draft bill, Orlu State would be carved out from portions of Imo, Abia, and Anambra states, with Orlu serving as its headquarters. The bill suggests including 28 local government areas within the new state, such as Orlu, Orsu, Oru West, and more.

Ugochinyere, the primary sponsor of the bill, urged fellow members of the National Assembly to throw their weight behind the legislation during the second reading. He believes that the establishment of Orlu State could pave the way for the creation of Ideato as a senatorial district.

It’s important to note that the South-East region of Nigeria currently has five states, unlike other geopolitical zones in the country that boast a minimum of six states. The proposed formation of Orlu State aims to rectify this disparity.

The bill has successfully passed its first reading in the House of Representatives, and its fate will be determined during subsequent readings and deliberations. If approved, the creation of Orlu State would necessitate constitutional amendments and could have significant ramifications for the region’s political landscape.

The Nigeria Government has fined Multichoice Nigeria for disobeying orders

Multi-choice Nigeria, the owners of DSTV and GoTv services, has been fined N150 million by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal for disobeying its orders. The orders had restrained the pay-TV company from increasing its monthly subscription fees while a lawsuit against them was being determined.

In addition to the fine, the tribunal has also directed Multichoice to provide a one-month free subscription to its DStv and GOtv packages for its Nigerian customers. This decision was made in response to a lawsuit filed by an Abuja-based lawyer, Festus Onifade, who argued that the 8-day notice given for the price increase was inadequate.

Multichoice had argued that previous rulings had settled price regulation issues and that the length of notice was not as significant as the price hike itself. However, the tribunal affirmed its jurisdiction and ruled against Multi-choice, stating that the notice period was indeed inadequate.

The court has scheduled July 3 for a hearing of the substantive suit filed by Festus Onifade. This hearing will further address the issues surrounding the price increase and the adequacy of the notice period.

This ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal serves as a reminder that companies must adhere to regulatory orders and provide proper notice to customers when making changes to subscription fees. It also highlights the importance of consumer protection in Nigeria.
