THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC RIGHTS AND ACCOUNTABILITY PROJECT REQUESTS FOR CLARITY FROM NIGERIA STATE GOVERNORS

The Socio-Economic Rights  and Accountability Project SERAP has requested for a detailed and crucial report  from the 36 state governors in Nigeria concerning the Independent Electoral Commission INEC operating within their state for ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

The call for state governors to disclose comprehensive details about the State Independent Electoral Commissions and local government elections is essential for upholding democratic principles.

Transparency in the appointment and operation of these commissions is vital to ensure fair and impartial elections.

It is important for the governors to adhere to the constitutional obligations and international standards to guarantee the integrity of the electoral process.

In an official statement released by The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Projects SERAP urged the state governors to reveal the important information.

The SERAPS effort to promote transparency and accountability are commendable in safeguarding the citizens’ right to participate effectively in governance.

THE NIGERIA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PLANS A SPECIAL PARLIAMENTARY SPACE FOR WOMEN

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, shared that the House is discussing a bill to set aside special seats for women in parliament.

This bill, known as the “Seat Reservation Bill,” aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to allocate specific seats for women in the legislature.

The Deputy Speaker made this announcement at the 2nd Women of Divine Destiny Initiative Inspiring Women Summit (2024) in Owerri, Imo State.

If approved, this legislation would significantly boost women’s representation in politics. Benjamin Kalu emphasised the importance of addressing gender equality and inclusiveness in a society striving for fair development.

The bill is co-sponsored by Benjamin Kalu and his colleagues, highlighting the need for improved female representation in governance.

THE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE LAGOS STATE NIGERIA SAYS CULTISM AND DRUG ABUSE ARE THE MAIN THREATS TO SECURITY

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police Nigeria CP Adegoke Fakayode, at the event organised by the police campaign against Cultism and other Vices called: Teenagers stay informed: know the Dangers of Cultism and Drugs says it is time to take urgent action to stop cultism and drug abuse in the society.

The Commissioner of Police says that cultism and drug abuse has become a huge menace to the society and need to be attended to.

He stated that “Today cultism is not only in the tertiary institutions, it has taken over every fabric of society; mechanics, barbers, drivers and others are now members of the cult.”

“The law enforcement agencies and stakeholders, family and individuals must join hands to tame this menace in the society,” the Commissioner said.

The Commissioner campaigned for good parenting for the youth to be well guided not to go astray by joining destructive groups.

THE NIGERIA PRESIDENT SHOWS CONCERN OVER THE SOLDIERS KILLED IN ABA NIGERIA

The Nigeria President Bola Tinubu released a statement expressing deep concern over the killing of five soldiers in Aba by suspected militants of the proscribed terrorist organisation, IPOB.

He strongly condemned these brutal acts and emphasised the government’s commitment to protecting security forces. President Tinubu highlighted the government’s determination to take decisive action against those who attack the armed forces.

The President urged security agencies to identify and hold accountable the perpetrators of the Aba attack and those inciting violence.

He emphasised that the government has the capability to address violent non-state actors and ensure the safety of communities.

President Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of the slain soldiers and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to maintain peace and security in the country.

THE FORMER NIGERIA DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF POLICE HAS BEEN RELEASED FROM PRISON

Abba Kyari, the Deputy Commissioner of Police who was suspended, and imprisoned for involvement in a drug related case has been freed from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja after spending 27 months in custody.

This came after a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Kyari a two-week bail for him to attend to his late mother’s burial rites.

The court scheduled May 31 for a decision on his bail application in a case involving drug-related charges by the Nigeria Drug and Enforcement Agency NDLEA, which began with his arrest over two years ago on February 14, 2022.

The spokesperson of the FCT Command of the NCoS, Adamu Duza, confirmed Kyari’s release upon meeting the bail requirements.

Kyari’s mother passed away on May 5, 2024, leaving behind 10 children, including Abba, the eldest son.
