Malawi in Southeastern Africa

The first cohort of twelve (12) young women from various local communities around Mzuzu City, Northern Region of Malawi, participated in the inaugural three (3) day media skills course training in community journalism.

This on-ground community journalism initiative is part of an on–going journalism education project so that journalism skills can be offered to the female youth in Malawi.

Implemented by the Media Institute Of Southern Africa (MISA – Malawi Chapter), this project also has full support from Germany’s public broadcaster DW Akademie media institution arm of training; known as the Essential Mobile Journalism (MoJo).

The mobile media skills training session took place at St. Johns Of God Centre Malawi.

According to Mr. Aubrey Chikungwa, the Executive Director of Media Institute Of Southern Africa (MISA – Malawi Chapter), the training is specifically designed to equip vibrant young women with essential fundamental skills to develop the necessary tools to conduct effective journalism techniques and digital cyber safety skills.

Fundamentally, the female youth will follow and learn the journalism ethics of impartiality, fact checking, effective digital storytelling and international media ethics.

Community Television Broadcasting is an Australian partner working with MoJo facilitators

On the final day of the training the young women were issued Certificates of Completion in Essential Mobile Journalism (MoJo) Skills.

Several other training experiences are scheduled to be conducted across Malawi engaging female youth from the rural communities to become fully equipped with digital storytelling skills and techniques.
