Germany humiliated Scotland with a 5-1 win in Euro 2024 opener

Germany was too hot for Scotland to hold as the host showed their class with an emphatic 5-1 win in the opening match yesterday.

Florian Wirtz scored the opener in 10th minute and Jamal Musiala doubled the lead soon after. The Scottish were dealt a blow when Ryan Porteous was sent off for two-footed challenge on İlkay Gündoğan before the halftime which gifted Kai Havertz a chance to score from the spot.

Niclas Füllkrug came on to compound the woes of Scotland with the fourth but Germany could not maintain clean sheet with an own goal from Antonio Rüdiger. There was still enough time for Emre Can to register his name on the score sheet with the fifth goal at the last minute.

Aymeric Laporte misses out from Span opener against Croatia

Laporte will not take part in the Spanish opening match against Croatia on Saturday, although he was fit enough to start.

Spain coach, Luis de la Fuente made this known in a press conference on Friday. He said he was not going to consider Laporte for selection even though he’s fit enough to play against the Croats.

“Aymeric Laporte didn’t get injured, he just had some issues and I decided we wouldn’t take the risk, so he’s not going to play tomorrow,” the head coach told reporters.

The La Roja’s are playing against Croatia, a very strong side with some of the best players in the world, it won’t be an easy walk in the park. The Spanish team will rely on the expertise of Rodri and their flying wingers Lamine Yamal (16) and Nico Williams (21) to make a good start on Saturday.

Will Southgate be able to win one for England?

It may be the last dance for the England manager as the team contend serious issues needing to be resolved on their way to opening match.

The Three Lions look not ready enough for the tournament after their defeat against Iceland, having displayed shaky performance during the last warm-up game. The team was booed off Wembley Stadium but Gareth Southgate said the game provided insight on the areas that needed some adjustments.

Let’s take a look at areas of concern for the Three Lions;

THE BACKLINE- The centre half will possible feature John Stones and Marc-Israel Guéhi with Harry Maguire missing out. Guéhi may be solid at Crystal Palace but unsettled at international level due to lack of experience. There are enough potentials to handle the right and left back.

THE MIDFIELD- The question of who will partner Declan Rice in the midfield still linger after Mainoo’s experiment didn’t work out with both having similar features. It will be either Bellingham or Foden to step into the attacking area.

The Coach needs to find a midfield balance as quickly as possible but the defence may be too late to fix.

Bentacur apologises to son for his racial abuse

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentakur (26) has apologised to his team mate Son Heung-min (31) on Friday over his comment which has gone viral.

The Uruguayan mentioned that the South Korean people look the same on Uruguayan television which has really gone out of contest. So, he apologised after his comments were met with criticism.

“Sorry brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke,” Bentakur wrote on his Instagram stories on Friday. “You know I love and I would never hurt you or anyone else. I love you, brother,” he added.

Uruguay are in their way to Copa America where they’ll play against Panama, United States, and Bolivia on Group C.

Messi and Martinez brace secured a win for Argentina against Guatamala

Early lead resulted in humiliation for Guatemala as Argentina pounded them 4-1.

Guatemala could not hold their steam after securing an early lead through Lisandro Martínez’s own goal just minutes into the game. Lionel Messi levelled affairs just four minutes thereafter before Lautaro Martinez put Argentina ahead with a penalty kick in the 39th minutes. Martinez added another after the break to get brace and Messi secured his double in the 77th minute after an appealing pass of Ángel Fabián Di María to seal the victory ahead of the Copa America tournament.
