THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA HAS PROPOSED THE DISCARDING OF THE STATE INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSIONS

The Nigeria Federal Government has accused the governors of using the state independent electoral commission to force leaders at the local government level through false elections. The federal government of Nigeria has called for discarding of the state independent electoral commissions.

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi, has said the governors hanged on inadequacy of some of the Nigeria constitution to make the local governments unessential.

The minister said because of the short coming of the Nigeria electoral process at the state level, ‘what is obtained is a virtual selection, not an election of local government representatives’. He also said that local government chairman’s are forced on the people by the State governors.

The minister goes further to say that the chairman forced on the people by the state governors would only be accountable to the governor instead of the people, causing a lack of transparency and little involvement of the citizens.

He has asked for the amendment of the constitution that will eradicate all the flaws disturbing the growth of local government.
