TUNDE ONAKOYA BECOMES GUINNESS RECORD HOLDER

Tunde Onakoya joins other Nigerians in setting global records in the game of chess. The Nigerian professional chess player grabs the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon chess game after lasting for 60 hours at about 12:40 a.m on Saturday. He overlapped the current chess marathon record of 56 hours, 9 minutes and 37 seconds which was accomplished in 2018 by Norwegians Hallvard Hang Flatebo and Sjur Ferkingstad.

The famous Nigerian established the Chess Slums Project in 2018 in Ikorodu, Lagos. The objective of the organisation is to liberate underprivileged children to work and support their families through a platform to play chess. Subsequently, he has successfully organised a number of chess competitions across Lagos and young Nigerians have benefited from it.

The 29 year old set out on his marathon session on Wednesday aiming to raise $1million for children’s education across Africa. The child education advocate plans to play the royal game for 58 hours but proceeded until he reached 60 hours setting a new world record. The entire world awaits the recognition and comment of the Guinness World Record organisation as it may take weeks to assess and confirm any new record.

It was a special moment for him seeing Nigerians travel all the way to New York to cheer him. Here are a few compatriots that have broken the Guinness World Records;

1. Hilda Baci in May, 2023

2. Gbenga Ezekiel in October, 2022

3. Vincent Okezie in March, 2022

4. Divine Ikubor (Rema) in May, 2023.
